2018 grads serve up Beef in a Bun

The David Stoddart School graduating class of 2018 will bring back the popular Beef in a Bun following the rodeo parade this weekend. On Saturday, May 26, the well-loved sandwich will be served up and available for purchase on Clinton’s parade route by DSS Grade 12 students, who are raising money for decorations, flowers, and boutonnieres for their graduation ceremony. The grads’ Beef in a Bun will sell for $8 a sandwich and will be offered until sold out.

Have you started your Funky Flower Pot?

Heritage Week is upon us, and summer is creeping up too—at last! Our days are longer and the weather is warming up, which means plenty of locals are spending more time in the garden. The Clinton Communities in Bloom committee hopes to see many residents participating in this year’s Funky Flower Pot contest to help make our Village shine throughout the summer.

The Funky Flower Pot contest is a fun way to get involved in the community and learn a thing or two about gardening. For this year’s contest, the CiB committee is encouraging participants to plant something—a flower, vegetable, or herb of their choice—in a container that may not normally be considered a planter’s pot. You might try planting something in an old desk, or maybe inside a tea kettle. Perhaps a wheelbarrow or rusted bucket will do? The choice is yours, and you’re meant to have fun getting creative with the contest.

Participants don’t need to register for the contest, but are asked to display their Funky Flower Pot in a clearly visible location so that neighbours and passersby can spot it. This part is particularly important if you would like to be nominated to win the contest, as the CiB committee intends to judge this contest in the same way that they judged the Christmas Light-Up contest, with residents voting to nominate the creations they enjoyed the most. The winner will be presented with the “Funky Cup” when the provincial Communities in Bloom judges visit Clinton for CiB evaluations in July.

If planting isn’t a hobby of yours, but is something you’re interested in learning more about, you should consider attending the upcoming planting workshop hosted at the As the Crow Flies greenhouse. You can even bring your Funky Flower Pot along! The planting workshop will take place on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. This event, hosted by Clinton CiB, costs $25 to attend, and includes a pot, soil, selected plants, and refreshments. Participants may choose to bring their own Funky Flower Pot or they can choose one of the pots provided.

“Be a Lifesaver” brings CPR/AED awareness to town

Did you know that every 13 minutes, someone in Canada suffers a cardiac arrest? If you’d like to be prepared in the event that someone you know suffers from cardiac arrest, an opportunity to learn hands-only CPR and AED is coming to Clinton soon. With early CPR and AED use, chances of survival for someone experiencing cardiac arrest increase by up to 50 per cent, so this really could be a life-saving opportunity.

On Friday, June 1, BC Emergency Health Services will bring their Be a Lifesaver event to Clinton. The free training program will allow participants to have the confidence to save a life at home, at work, or within their communities.

To take part, stop by the Clinton Memorial Hall on June 1, where you will learn hands-only CPR and AED awareness from BC Emergency Health Services paramedics during a free 30-minute session. Drop-in participants are welcome at any sessions that aren’t fully booked, and sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Be a Lifesaver is supported by St. John’s Ambulance and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. To register for a spot, contact Diana Guerin at (250) 644-8911 or (250) 457-7048.

Art Show and Sale coming soon

The Clinton Art and Cultural Society will present its Art Show and Sale on July 21 and July 22 at the Clinton Memorial Hall. It will feature projects created with a specific theme in mind: “Dog Days of Summer”. Original artwork and handmade crafts will be featured, and the event will also include a silent auction, with proceeds to charity.

All local artists are invited to display their work, but CASC members can sign up for free; non-members may register for $10. A cash prize will be awarded to the “People’s Choice of Art”. For more information, or to register, contact Nancy McMinn by phone at (250) 459-2976 or by email at snirt6@gmail.com.

The deadline to enter the Show and Sale is July 15, giving artists ample time to consider and complete their creations.
