“In summer the song sings itself.”
William Carlos Williams
As you read this, July 1 has come and gone. I hope you took time to join the festivities in the park to celebrate Canada Day.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Clinton Seniors’ Association yard, book, and bake sale on July 1, and thank you to all who helped to make the day a success.
Work is progressing well on the wheelchair ramp at the back of the Seniors’ Centre.
I don’t have a date for the next Foot Clinic, but if you are concerned about your foot health or want to book an appointment, call Colleen Thom, RN CAFCN, at 1-250-819-1632.
In June I returned from a trip to Iceland. It’s a country known for its natural wonders: glaciers, active volcanos, black sand beaches, geothermal areas and geysers, roaring rivers, majestic waterfalls, and beautiful lakes. We walked through a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a rift valley that marks the separation between the North American and European tectonic plates, and enjoyed a boat cruise to see whales in their natural habitat. What a wonderful holiday!
Summertime may be the perfect time for you to unwind and take a vacation. Getting away from it all can help lower your stress. Managing your stress level helps reduce your risk for stroke, and walking, swimming, or dancing are all activities you may enjoy. Moderate aerobic exercise can make a dramatic difference to your health, as it can help manage blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, as well as keep your bones and muscles strong.
Plan for a healthy trip. Make sure all your vaccinations are up to date, and ensure you have all the medicines you need to last your whole trip. Keep your meds in your carry-on bag, and bring extra in case your return is delayed. It is a good idea to carry with you a list of the medicines you take, including brand and generic names. And it’s a good idea to photocopy the ID page of your passport and put it in your suitcase, in case you lose that important document.
Clinton Seniors’ Association members will enjoy a well-deserved summer break from meetings and events. The next regular general meeting will be on September 21, so come and join us!
New members of the Association are always welcome. The annual membership fee is $15, and monthly meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at the Clinton Seniors’ Centre at 217 Smith Avenue, following a soup and sandwich and cake lunch.
The Clinton Seniors’ Association has three fundraisers a year: in March (Daffodil Tea); July (July 1 yard sale); and November (Marketplace). The seniors support the monthly Foot Clinic and other activities during the year.
Happy Birthday to Helene Cade (July 22).
