Shine up your skis and repair your outhouses, the 10th annual Interlakes Outhouse Races registrations are open.
Anyone looking to race is invited to sign up now via fishinghighway24.com or in person the day of. Irene Meili, chair of the Fishing Highway Tourist Association, said they’re aiming to host the event on the Family Day long weekend behind the Iron Horse Pub. Last year the race took place in April after a freak snowstorm delayed them.
“We try to have more people every year. It would be nice to have every corner of our community come out and enter an outhouse they built,” Meili said. “It doesn’t take that much time to build an outhouse. It’s not that much of a task. Sometimes there’s a lot of work involved but sometimes you can go low-key and make it light and easy to push and pull.”
As in previous years, Meili said the Iron Horse will be serving breakfast and they’ll have several categories based on age for people to race in. Races usually kick off at 11 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. when prizes and rewards are given out for those who claim the top times in their categories.
This year Meili said she is looking to expand the event by adding new activities. At the moment she’s considering doing a tug-of-war or maybe a cross-country ski race, but is open to community suggestions.
“We would like to extend the event a little bit,” Meili said. “We’ll see what we come up with. If a group of people wants to set up a booth to sell their handmade crafts, they should contact me. Same with snow games, if there’s a group of people who want to organize something please contact me. The more we have going on the better of an event it’s going to be.”
