The annual sensory-friendly event at the Museum of Surrey is back in June.

The museum and the City of Surrey’s Accessibility Services Team will co-host “Sensory Fun” June 14 at the museum in Cloverdale.

Lynn Saffery, museum manager, said in a press release he was “excited” the event was made possible by both partners and museum staff members.

“To find ways that everyone in Surrey and beyond are able to access Museum of Surrey programs and events is a top priority,” Saffery said. “This means that we will continue to be free of charge, provide accessibility opportunities, and ensure everyone is welcome and included."

Museum-goers will be presented with “an array” of hands-on activities both inside and outside the museum. The museum will have several community partners on site too, with each hosting their own activities: Honeybee Centre, Surrey Nature Centre, Surrey Natural Areas Partnership, Surrey United Soccer, Centre of Child Development and Autism Community Training, and others.

“Experience a mini sound bath, complete a scavenger hunt, have your face painted, explore the galleries, buy refreshing treats from Kona Ice food truck and explore your creative side through summertime crafts,” the release noted.

The Museum of Surrey has provided sensory-focused experiences on site since 2019—in collaboration with the Canucks Autism Network—when they started operating sensory-friendly hours (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) on the first Sunday of every month.

During sensory-friendly hours, the museum reduces the lighting and sound levels throughout the building for those sensitive to higher levels of both. The museum also offers noise-cancelling headphones at all times for guests.

“We invite the community to join us for a truly inclusive and celebratory event, embracing the diversity that enriches our community.”

“Sensory Fun” will run on June 14 from 12 - 4 p.m. at the Museum of Surrey, 17710 56A Avenue in Cloverdale. Entrance is free.
