Lytton RCMP files

It’s fire season and motorcycle season, so be careful out there on and off the roads.

By Sgt. Curtis Davis

Lytton RCMP responded to 37 calls for service from April 27 to May 10, six of which were traffic-related.

CN vehicle break-in

Between April 27 and 30, a company vehicle on CN property south of Lytton was broken into. Tools, a fuel card, and an iPod were stolen. Security cameras are being considered for the area.

Prohibited driver

On April 29, a prohibited driver from Coquitlam was stopped for speeding on the Trans-Canada at Lytton and had his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in court on June 12.

Too many pot-ted plants

On May 2, Lytton RCMP attended a property in Botanie Valley to assist with a landlord and tenant dispute. When the door was opened, 30 marihuana plants were found in plain view. These and 15 others were seized and destroyed by police.

Stolen items

On May 8, we received a complaint of stolen fuel and tools from a construction site on a nearby Forest Service Road. Unfortunately, there were no witnesses to this theft.

Motorcycle season

Looking out of my office window, it is definitely motorcycle season in the Fraser Canyon, and it’s a gorgeous place to ride. In my years as a Mountie, I have seen too many motorcycle collisions, which often cause terrible injuries and are usually avoidable. Be alert to all road users: motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Fire season

That should be sufficient. It is fire season, and we all have been impacted by wildfires in recent years.

We have already had at least seven wildfires in the Lytton area, most of them caused by carelessness. The BC Wildfire Act allows for a fine of $575 for discarded flammable material, and there are other potential charges such as littering, etc.

Last year I was living and working in Clinton. It was a horrible summer, and a tragedy in many respects. I recall stopping a vehicle during fire season because someone threw a cigarette butt out of the window. I asked to see their ashtray: spotless.

There can be no excuse. I have instructed my colleagues that cigarettes being thrown out of vehicles will result in a charge.
