A good New Year to one and all!

Some time ago, Kathy Morris suggested that we might like to take our card playing to Thompson View Manor on a weekly basis. So now on Thursdays we go there to play “Hand and Foot”; and believe me, there are some great players there. We have to play hard to keep up with them!

On December 7, Kathy and I went to their Christmas afternoon tea, along with Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and the Grinch, who entertained us mightily. Pictures were taken of residents and guests with Santa, and there was much visiting between them, with the resulting laughter and good cheer. Presentations were made, and Kathy made one on behalf of the Seniors’ Centre, to be used to fund recreational events and outings for the residents.

On December 14 we held our turkey lunch, which was catered and served at the Ashcroft Legion by the Legion Ladies. There were more than thirty of us present, and from all the chatter that was going on a good time was had by all! It was wonderful to have us all in one place at one time—that does not happen very often!—and this was a great opportunity to renew acquaintances.

The last potluck lunch and business meeting for 2017 was held on December 20, and the Centre will be closed until January. Since January 1 is on a Monday, Bridge games will be postponed until Wednesday, January 3, with Carpet Bowling and card-playing on the usual days. Bingo will return on January 6.

Somewhere I remember reading that all our modern-day celebrations are modern versions of older ones, only with new names. It made sense to me, because at this time of the year I can remember not very much about Christmas when I was little, but a lot about Hogmanay or New Year! In Scotland then, in pre-TV days, there was much house-to-house visiting, with the three traditional gifts of a lump of coal for warmth, shortbread for food, and of course something to drink: like Scotch Whisky! So I will leave you with a toast (in English, for all you Sassenachs):

A Good New Year to one and all

And many may you see,

And during all the years to come

Oh, happy may you be!

All the best in 2018 from the Ashcroft Cache Creek Seniors’ Centre to all our friends and neighbours.
