Flags on display during Canada Day in Summerland

Celebration held to mark Canada’s 158th birthday

It was a time for national pride as hundreds of people attended Summerland’s Canada Day celebrations in Memorial Park.

The event included a flag-raising ceremony, speeches by dignitaries and a barbecue with cake and ice cream.

The event marked Canada’s 158th birthday and John Dorn of the Summerland Legion noted that Canada is ranked the fifth happiest country in the world.

Throughout the day, many of those present were dressed in red and white, or displaying Canadian flags.

Dorn said international news in recent months, including the the U.S. president’s repeated comments about annexing Canada instilled a level of nationalism among the Canadian population.
