GP Vanier Secondary School has named its recipient for the Governor General's Academic Medal for this school year.
For nearly 150 years, the Governor General’s Academic Medals have recognized the outstanding scholastic achievements of students in Canada. They are awarded to the student graduating with the highest average from a high school, as well as from approved college or university programs.
Students at GP Vanier Secondary School were in a close race to determine the winner of the Bronze Medal available at the secondary level. Less than 0.5 percentage points separated the top three candidates this year.
The award winner was well recognized at the district level as one of our best and brightest. She also was winner of the Vanier Summit Shield Award, which is awarded to an outstanding student in academics, electives, extracurricular, leadership, citizenship and athletics. Academically, she has excelled with a final average of 99 per cent over three years in subjects including pre-calculus and Calculus 12, Physics 12, Anatomy 12, World History 12, and just for fun – Spanish.
Congratulations to Erika Burry!
Next steps for Burry are to head to UBC in September to enrol in a Physics program. She is choosing to follow a passion in physics and will see where it takes her next. She also will be continuing with track and field as a javelin athlete as part of UBC’s team.
"Best of luck to you, Erika, for your academic studies and for your athletic competitions, too!" a release from SD71 says. "Vanier is proud of you!"
