Comings and Goings On in Spences Bridge

The SBCC has big plans involving the old elementary school, so find out what they have in mind.

I think we are all more than ready for spring! Snowfall warnings for the mountain passes again, in mid-April. I suppose we’ll be complaining about the heat soon enough!

The Spences Bridge Improvement District, which owns the old school and grounds, has put forward a Request for Proposals to manage the property. The Spences Bridge Community Club is considering taking on this venture, but it will mean many more volunteers to be successful. The SBCC wants to be sure that it has the support of the community before submitting a proposal. To that end, there is a town hall-type meeting scheduled for Monday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at Clemes Hall: please come!

The New Horizons for Seniors Grant program is moving along nicely. There was a great turnout at the Spring Equinox dinner. Thank you so much to Rose Hill for taking the time to share your knowledge of, and engaging us in learning about, the medicine wheel.

The weekly Tuesday Soup Day continues, with a variety of arts and activities after we eat. Thank you Carol Madden for sharing your pine needle basket-making skills. Annette Albert taught a group of folks medicine pouch making and beading; thanks Annette! And currently Wanda Dickenson is teaching quilting; the last session is on April 24. Thanks, Wanda!

On May 1 and 15 we’ll be doing line dancing with Dorothy Borangno, so come have some soup and kick up your heels; it should be fun. May 22 and 29 will see us crafting with rocks: yes, rock art! Rock on… .

The grant will pay for the ingredients for the soup, buns, and dessert for anyone willing to volunteer to make it. One of this grant’s intentions is to promote volunteerism, so I encourage everyone to get involved. As we are also promoting multi-generational connections, and community unity, everyone is welcome!

Easter Sunday saw a decent-sized group of folks turn up in the sunshine (the timing couldn’t have been better; the storm blew in just as we were cleaning up!). The Easter Bunny left plenty of treat for the kids to gather, we played lots of games, and everyone filled up with the wiener roast! Thank you to Cook’s Ferry, the fire department, The Log Cabin Pub, The Packing House, and the Inn for the contributions!

The weather also cooperated for our spring clean-up. Twelve folks walked the streets and highways and gathered all the litter (I just saw some new litter on the stretch I did; how frustrating!). Thanks to everyone for helping out and to The Log Cabin for the pizza donation!

Bingo continues on the first and third Mondays of the month. This is a great fundraiser for the SBCC, and you can have fun while supporting us. The concession always has something tasty for dinner, and the toonie pot is growing!

On May 12 and 13 there will be a community-wide garage sale. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days you can drive around the community and look for participating houses. And start Mother’s Day on May 13 off right with the fire department’s pancake breakfast. The breakfast will be at the old school starting at 9 a.m.

The Farmers’ Flea Market will be starting up again on May 6, and will run every first and third Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Clemes Hall. You’ll find arts, crafts, plants, jams, baking, locally roasted coffee, second-hand treasures and more, as well as coffee and treats at the concession. Make it a Sunday habit to stop in and say hello and see what the market has to offer. For table rentals please call Terri at (250) 458-2513.

Our last regular meeting before our summer break is May 9 starting at 7 p.m. at Clemes Hall. Please visit our website at www.spencesbridgecommunity.ca for more information and a calendar of events, and like and follow us on Facebook (Spences Bridge Community Club).
