Spring! Hurray! So happy to have the longer days, and now everyone is itching to get out in the garden!
As mentioned in my last article, we at the Spences Bridge Community Club (SBCC) are very thankful to Service Canada for the New Horizons for Seniors (NHS) program grant. The spring equinox dinner will have come and gone before the paper goes to print, but I hope the turnout is good and everyone will enjoy celebrating spring with great company and a fantastic feast!
The NHS soup days are once a week. Every Tuesday, everyone is welcome to come to Clemes Hall at noon to share a nice lunch and stay for some arts and crafts afterwards. Thank you to Carol Madden, who started things off by sharing her pine needle basket-making skills with folks. Next up, on March 27 and April 3, Joe Thomas and Annette Albert will teach some medicine pouch making and beading, and on the next three Tuesdays we will learn quilting with Wanda Dickensen. Thanks to everyone for stepping up to share their skills, and thanks, too, to all the cooks for the delicious food!
Everyone is welcome to join in the NHS meetings to help plan and organize. The meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 11 a.m. before soup.
Don’t forget our other regular events. Bingo is held on the first and third Monday of the month at Clemes Hall; doors open at 5:30 p.m. Swim Day in Merritt is every Monday; meet at 12:30 p.m. at Hesk’En’Chute
Easter is fast approaching, and the SBCC is again hosting the annual Easter Egg hunt and community picnic. Please join us at the old school at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 1 for an egg hunt, games, prizes, bake sale, and wiener roast! Thank you to Cooks Ferry, the Fire Department, the Log Cabin Pub, The Packing House, The Inn, and the Spences Bridge Improvement District for all your contributions!
On Saturday, April 7 the SBCC is organizing a town clean-up. We spend a few hours walking the streets and highways picking up litter; it might not sound like much fun, but we partner up and socialize and have lunch when we’re done! Many hands make light work, so please join us at 10 a.m. at the old school.
This Mother’s Day, the SBCC is helping to promote a town garage day sale! Clean out your basements and closets and make some money: the more homes involved the better! This will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; no early birds, please! You can start things off with a Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast at Clemes Hall from 8 to 11 a.m.
Regular SBCC meetings are the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Clemes Hall. Everyone is welcome! Please check out our website at www.spencesbridgecommunity.ca; you’ll also see a calendar there with all events posted. Like us on Facebook and stay in the loop!
I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the SBCC, to express our heartfelt gratitude to outgoing fire chief Arnie Oram! Under Arnie’s leadership, the SBCC has enjoyed many, many years of a great partnership. Arnie was always there for us: for the Halloween fireworks, the Easter bonfire, the pancake breakfasts, and the property management at Desert Daze, just to name a few. Amazing volunteers like Arnie are hard to find. The number of volunteer hours that this man has put in for our little community is astonishing, and we will never be able to thank him enough.
