And suddenly it’s spring! Really suddenly. On one hand it’s delightful; on the other hand, the potential for flooding is a terrible worry. Not that we can do anything about it…
Firstly, to report on the hall renovations. Clemes Hall has never looked so good! Paul Miller has done an amazing job, with the interior now freshly drywalled and painted, new windows installed, and so much more! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Paul for taking the task to a lovely artistic level. We aren’t finished yet: the exterior is next, and then a gazebo.
I’m really looking forward to the completion of the entire project. When it is all done, we will have a grand opening to show off this beautifully refurbished historical building. Of course, none of it would be possible without the support of our TNRD Director Steve Rice, who assisted in getting the TNRD and the NDIT grants: thanks to them all.
The TNRD waste reduction coordinator is coming to Clemes Hall at 1 p.m. on April 12 to do a presentation on recycling. Come out and learn more about how best to reduce our garbage!
Bingo continues to be held on the first and third Mondays at the hall, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. There are always good things to eat for supper available at the concession. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Oliva Watson for her years of dedication in volunteering to put on the bingo. Oliva has decided to step down, and the Spences Bridge Community Club wishes her all the best. Thanks to Annette Albert for offering to take over running the bingo!
There will be an Easter Egg hunt and community picnic on Easter Sunday (April 22). Please watch for posters and more details next month. And there will be two community garage sales at Clemes Hall: on Saturday, April 6 and Saturday, April 28, both from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with table rentals available for $5/table. Clean out your basement, garage, or attic and make some money, or just come by to see what treasures you can find!
Desert Daze planning is well underway now. This is our 10th festival, which I think is amazing! To celebrate, we have invited back some of our favourite artists from previous years who have contributed to the success of our “Best Little Fest in the West”! And, as this is the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, we’re celebrating that too, so plan to come dressed like it’s 1969!

A reminder to folks that the SBCC has a video camera, a still camera, a laptop, an iPad, a projector with screen, and a 61-key USB electronic piano keyboard in our “tech library”, all of which are available to borrow. Just call (250) 457-1505 to make arrangements.
It’s time for our spring town clean-up! As we do every year, we walk the streets and highways picking up litter. If we get a good gang together it only takes two hours and boy, what a difference it can make to our town. Please join us on March 30 at 10 a.m. at the Post Office. We supply high-vis vests, garbage bags, gloves, picker-uppers, and lunch!
On a separate day, we do the Madden Island clean-up. On April 13 starting at 10 a.m., we’ll mow, weed whack, rake, and so on to spruce it up for campers. Please bring your own tools/mowers/weed whackers. We will feed you lunch when we’re through!
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of Moe Linneberg. Moe was a long-time resident of Spences Bridge, and a long-time supporter of the Community Club. He was one of those behind the scenes SBCC volunteers. You would arrive at the hall and see that the weeds had been mowed, or the snow shoveled, or his outside light left on for us in the dark. He also made a point of attending and supporting SBCC events. He will be greatly missed.
The SBCC is hosting a gathering to honour his memory on April 14 at 11 a.m. We will meet at Clemes Hall, where a plaque will be put up, then move to Madden Island for a wiener roast. Moe liked a good wiener roast. Hope to see many people there.
