Ah, February, you are so fickle. Just when I thought the worst of winter was over, you slap us in the face with a nice long wintery cold snap! Ah well, it won’t be long before we’re complaining about the heat and begging for rain!

One nice thing about February is Valentine’s Day. Even if one is not currently “in love”, who can complain about extra sweet treats? On Feb. 12 we had a lovely Valentine’s-themed Soup Day with special guest speaker Opie Oppenheim. There was a good turnout of more than 20 folks to listen to Opie talk of the importance of having positivity, hope, kindness, and forgiveness in your life, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch with lots of extra Valentines’ goodies! Thanks so much to Opie for coming to our community to share his positive message, and to the volunteers who helped with lunch.

Another successful soup day was our vegetarian cooking class with Lawrence Woodford (Manu das). Such an entertaining cooking teacher! Someone remarked that he should have a cooking show on TV, and the meal was amazing! I think everyone learned many skills about this cooking style to take home. Thanks, Manu!

We have one more New Horizons for Seniors event, with the date to be determined: an information session on end of life care. With an aging demographic in our community, there are more and more folks who will be needing to know what services are out there and how best to navigate through it all.

And that brings an end to our New Horizons for Seniors grant program. Thanks to Service Canada for providing the funding over this last year to support our project, entitled “Seniors working towards community unity”. Our events have brought folks together, but there is always much more to be done. So, without the grant, let’s continue to strive to connect and unite, to make all our communities the best that they can be.

The Spences Bridge Community Club is hosting a Community Garage Sale on Feb. 24 at Clemes Hall, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Table rentals are $5; please call Terri at (250) 458-2513. This is a great opportunity to “Marie Kondo” your house! If it doesn’t bring you joy, sell it (spouses not applicable!).

The renovations at Clemes Hall are really coming along nicely. The ceiling is now complete, with beautiful pine board. The paint colours are chosen, and we are all really looking forward to seeing the final result! The renovations do mean that things are a bit messy at the hall, so please bear with us as we work through our regular events.

Don’t forget Bingo is every first and third Monday of the month. Come on out and have some fun, visit with neighbours, have a tasty meal, and maybe win some cash (the toonie pot is over $300!!). Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the SBCC is on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at Clemes Hall. Everyone is welcome, and in fact encouraged, to attend!
