Hundreds of graduates are set to be honoured at Royal Roads University’s 56th convocation ceremony.
Across four ceremonies on Friday (June 6), 708 students will receive their academic credential at the Dogwood Auditorium, in front of an audience packed full of friends and family.
“The world needs changemakers now more than ever, and our newest graduates are ready to rise to that challenge,” said the university’s president and vice-chancellor Philip Steenkamp, in a news release.
“As they begin their journey as alumni, the creativity, courage, and care they showed as students will continue to guide them. I have every confidence they will make a meaningful impact in their communities, their countries, and across the globe.”
It will be a special day for Rajinder Sohal, who will receive the Governor General’s Gold Medal for her thesis when she graduates with her doctor of social sciences degree.
During the day, both B.C. Lt.-Gov Janet Austin and Elder SPOLTENOT Lavina Charles will be awarded honorary doctor of laws.
The university says it is recognizing Austin for her leadership and service to the people of B.C. in her role as the 30th lieutenant governor of British Columbia.
While Charles, a member of the Heron People Circle at Royal Roads, is being recognized for her contributions to community, culture, traditional teachings and language revitalization.
The four ceremonies will be live-streamed on the university’s website for those unable to attend: www.royalroads.ca/springconvocation.
For the Indigenous graduation celebration, Elders, Indigenous students, family and friends will gather for a private ceremony to celebrate students’ achievements.
