Surrey's famous flea market turned 50 this year.

The Cloverdale Flea Market has now been running for five decades, having got its start in the spring of ’75.

Andy Janes, general manager of the flea market, said they’ll be hosting a number of activities over the summer to celebrate the half-century milestone.

“We are incredibly grateful to the community for supporting us over the past 50 years," Janes noted in a press release about their five-decade-long run. “(It) is a testament to the vibrant network of vendors, shoppers, and partners who have made the Cloverdale Flea Market what it is today."

Janes called the Cloverdale Flea Market “iconic” and said it was Western Canada's “largest community market.”

He added the market has brought people from across the Lower Mainland together over the last 50 years “to discover unique treasures, vintage finds, and handmade goods.” He noted the market has become a “beloved … cornerstone of Surrey's cultural and economic landscape.”

The 50th-anniversary celebrations are scheduled to take place over the summer on the Fairgrounds with live entertainment, giveaways, and vendor deals awaiting market-goers.

According to the release, “Shoppers can explore the market's diverse collection of products while enjoying activities designed for the whole family.”

The Cloverdale Flea Market first opened its doors in the spring of 1975.

“What began as a modest gathering has blossomed into Western Canada's largest community market, and a cherished tradition deeply woven into the fabric of the community.”

The popular Fairgrounds attraction runs from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on nearly every Sunday of the year. (The market is closed over Rodeo Weekend and a few weeks around Christmas and New Year’s.)
