How does your street look? Are you proud of its appearance? Ashcroft Communities in Bloom thinks we have a lot to be proud of in our village. We have been told by our judges every year since we began the program how neat and tidy our town is, and how much pride our residents take in where they live. This is high praise indeed, as these judges see many towns all across Canada.

Communities in Bloom would like to acknowledge this pride by awarding a “Best Street” award. We felt it was best to do a “street” award as opposed to a “best block”, because we are not a city and do not have blocks to work with. Granted, some streets will be longer than others, but we will take that into consideration.

We will be looking for neatness and curb appeal specifically. You do not need to have masses of flowers—in fact, you can have none at all—but we will look at the care that is taken with each property, and all the properties on the street collectively. We want to look at it with the eyes of a visitor to our town and say “What a lovely street!”

Our committee will be out and about over the next month looking at yards and streets. We will be honouring six residents for their yards and awarding each with a “Scott’s Best Garden” award, as well as one street for the Best Street Award.

We are planning a community meet-and-greet when our national judges arrive to judge our village. On Monday, July 17 we will be gathering at the Heritage Park on Railway for cake and refreshments, and will be honouring all the winners at that time. Everyone is welcome.

This is a great opportunity to show our judges our lovely park and the historic artifacts and beautiful glass mosaics that are showcased there, in an informal gathering so they can chat with the local residents.
